EPITOME OR DIGEST.
PANTALEON LiGanipes of Scio, born abont 1612, was in the Greek college at Rome sixteen years, 1626-1642, to the age of thirty: he took the degrees of doctor in philos, and theol, with great distinction; was ordained deacon and priest at Romeo by Raphael Korsak, Ruthenian mete, of Little Russia, p. 13 (and Replies of Nicon, p.050), In 1637 he published in a book of his fellow-student Neophytus Rodino an Apology for Peter Arcudius, dedicated to-Urban VILE; and in another tract of the same Neophytus, On the Maynisicat, ho printed a Letter to the archbishop of Naples. p. 2 (and Replies &e. p. 586), In t642 he left Rome for Constantinople, counting perhaps on the favour of the then patriarch Parthenius bs but he being soon forced to mako way for another, Liyarides transferred himself to the Danubian principalities, and thenea went to Poland and to Muscovy, where he died in 1678, Tn 1650 ho served the meter. Stephen of ‘Tergovist by assisting in the preparation of a Wallachian edition of the Kormehay, which was published in 1652; but his fixed employment in the principalities was that of teacher in the school founded by the Vasilt Loupoulus, bey or hospodar of Moldavia, at Jassy. p. 4... Here he was of course known only as Orthodox; but he kept up his relations with his fellow-countryman Leo Allatius, and others of the Roman school, to whom he wrote as a Catholic, Ite gained the favour of Paisius patriarch of Jerusalem, who took him with him from Jassy, late in 1650, in company with Arsenius Souchanofl; aud, having passed by Scio, they arrived on the 6th Oct. 1651 at Jerusalem, On Sunday 16th Noy, the patriarch tonsured him to be a monk (on which occasion he took from his patron -the name of Paisius), and committed him to the charge of Arsonius Souchanoff, who was to be his novice-master. p. 5. Betiwwoon that time and Easter 1652 (when Arsenius left) Jornsalem was visited by the patriareh Maeavius of Antioch with his son and archdcacon Paul: they met there Arsonius Souchanofl; and they had personal knowledge of the fact that the patriarch Paisius ordained (that is, reardalned, though he may have been unaware of it) Ligarides deacon and priest, p. 14, 422, 4285 and according to his own account made him protopresbyter, While living at Jerusalem he compiled a /istury of the Patriarchs of Jerusalem down to Heraclius, but quite ina Latin sense; the Ms, of Which work becoming known afterwards (Dositheus, who was first archdeacon to the patriarch Nectarius of Jerusalem, and then patriarch himself, made great use of it in his own similar //istory), was condemned, together with its author, who was anuthematised as a heretic by the patriarchs Nectarius of Jerusalem and Methodius of C.P. (so this probably was in 1667-1668), p. 6, But in the mean time, between 1652 and 1656, the patriarch Paisius of Jerusalem consecrated Ligarides bishop to the see of Gaza, with the title of metropolitan, Whether he ever resided there, nay even whether he was ever there at all, is doubted by Nicon in his Replies, p. 97. At any rate in 1656-1657 he was living again in Moldavia and Wallachia, where he was scen by the patriarch Macarius of Antioch, In 1657 Nicon, who had need of Grecks of intelligence and learning, having heard of him from Arsenius Souchanoff, and that he wished to go to Moscow, wrote to him inviting him thither. p. 8% Ife seems to have served Stephen bey of Moldavia in that intrigue by which he supplanted Vasili bey (/tep/ics, p. 46); and afterwards, when both Stephen bey of Moldavia and Constantine bey of Wal- Jachia had been deposed, in 1657, he fled after them into ‘Transylvania, where he was robbed of all he had, p. 7. Ife was deposed, degraded, and excommunicated by the patriarch of Jerusalem Nectarius (the successor of Paisius) for erimes of which in 1669-1670 Dositheus then patriarch of Jerusalem wroty to the tsar Alexis that modesty did not allow him to name them, p. 547, 552, 551, 10, 94, 96, 99-101, B60, 392, 422, 425, 79, Ife was (according to Nicon in his Replies, p. 586) a long time in Poland, under the Polish king, and he said mass in all their kostels. Mugenius sometiine metropolitan of Kieff, in his Dict, of Leeles, Writers &c, writes that he came to Moscow in 1660 with a letter from the patriarch of C.P, Parthenius TV, Koumkoum (MoyiAados), recommending him as fit to be employed in the affair of Nicon, p. 10. But this is inaccurate: ho writes distinctly of himself that he came to Moscow Wiwdedws, of his own will, without any invitation or mission, not to accuse or to judge Nicon, but on speculation, for the pecuniary needs of Aés poor see; and that he arrived first at Moscow on the 28th Apr. 1662, This he pleaded in 1666 to the tsar himself, when he begged to be dismissed before the arrival of the two patriarchs, then expected, Ife may no doubt have had his original letters of orders both Roman and Greek, and the letter given to him on his consecration to be a bishop; aud a letter perhaps from the patriarch of C.V. Parthenius I, of a date somewhat carlicr than 1640, with which he first went from C.P, to the Danubian principalities. But neither of himself, when he first came to Moscow, nor when canonical letters were dananded of him at Voskresensk in 1663 by the patriarch Nicon, did he even by his own account exhibit any letters, or pretend to have any. And for this reason Nicon refused to have anything to do with him, and warned the tsar of the impropriety and the sin of receiving such persons as came Unaccredited,
