The opening

Well 1

The first well is holy waters. Princes dug it, sages skilled in craft. Its waters separate a person from every defilement. They protect a person from severe illnesses, heal and remove the afflictions of men, and strengthen and renew the power of the weak. From there it divides and becomes four heads.

The first complaint is their claim that the chachamim added to the Torah through the decrees they enacted and the additions they made, until they overfilled the measure. These are the waters of strife over which they contend, saying that the Torah states, (Devarim 4:2) “You shall not add.” They also claim that there are now two Torahs: the Torah given by Hashem through Moshe, peace be upon him, and a separate Torah of the chachamim, rather than the one Torah that there ought to be. Through this, they say, the Torah of Moshe is itself deficient, since it must be completed by the mitzvos of the chachamim. They further claim that the chachamim subtracted from the Torah, while the verse states there, “You shall not subtract.” Such are their words.
